HEADGEAR – THE NEW INTERACTIVE DRUG EDUCATION WEBSITE

Find out the facts about drugs – that’s the message for pupils and parents when Edinburgh’s Education Department launches HEADGEAR – a new interactive drug education website.

Commenting on the new site, Councillor Ewan Aitken, Executive Member for Education, said,

“It is very easy to preach to young people and just tell them to say no but this is not always the best way to get them to listen to an important message.

Here in Edinburgh we take drug education very seriously and use a range of resources. We believe Headgear will be a valuable addition to our existing resources by enabling pupils to access the information they require and get answers to the questions they sometimes are afraid or embarrassed to ask. This website gives a serious message to pupils in a fun way.

We recognise that many parents have concerns about drugs and also want information. Several of our schools have successfully hosted Drug Awareness information evenings for parents and the new website will ensure that they can readily access information and advice”.

The website forms part of a Scottish Executive funded project to support drug education in the city’s schools. In addition to the website, new resources have been bought for primary, secondary and special schools.
